In the world of Hollywood it's beyond difficult to make it, this has been true since movies became popular and flocks of Midwestern kids headed west to make their dreams come true. When a star does breakthrough it's due to years of persistence and hard work, although it's also important to recognize the movies capital in launching their new careers.
If you look back in film history you can always spot one or more of these types of movies. These are the kind that put a star on the map and announce to everyone that they will be around for a while. One such film was Basketball Diaries which launched the career of Leonardo DiCaprio.
Even though he was just a teenager in that movie his performance and the quality of the film itself was enough to commence his long lasting career.
Coincidentally that movie also launched the acting career of Mark Walberg who is now an actor and producer and has starred in many blockbuster hits. Another example of a movie that had a massive cast in which almost everyone went on to do amazing things was Quentin Tarantino's low budget hit, "Reservoir Dogs." It was a an amazing accomplishment from a first time director and everyone in that movie had a long running career in Hollywood.
Even though the movie was put together on a shoestring budget the unique storyline and great dialog propelled this movie to a cult classic which is watched over and over by tons of fans. Due to the fact that it launched so many careers this film definitely belongs on the list of movies capital in changing young actors' lives.
On the other end of the spectrum there are movies that feature one young budding star as if the entire film was written for them. In this case it is very clear to tell who the focus is on and in some cases can be a bit of a gamble in the sense that everything is resting on the shoulders of one person.
An example of this kind of film would be "Mad Max," a movie that put superstar Mel Gibson on the map. The entire incident was a freak accident when Mel arrived on the set to drop off a friend and was noticed by the director.
He was called back for a small part but when he arrived the director asked him to read for the lead role and the rest was history. Now these types of occurrences are not everyday which is why this film especially belongs on the list of movies capital in introducing new talent to the silver screen.
These movies are far and few apart so keep an eye out for them whenever they do come out so you can be the first to spot budding talent.
